“Ambitious does just what it says on the tin. They were hugely ambitious for us near the start of our journey as we grew awareness of our brand Women Outside The Box. They worked massively hard and were relentless in pursuing opportunities on our behalf. A well-connected and intelligent team who speedily understood us and how to position us vis a vis the media.”

About Women Outside The Box WOTB
Women Outside The Box is a network for female entrepreneurs, where women talk, share, learn and promote their businesses off and online. In addition to monthly city business clubs across the South West, the organisation hosts an annual two day conference in Bristol, which features high profile key note speakers an exhibition and mass-networking opportunities.
The challenge
Having used her pension to fund the inaugural Women Outside the Box Festival at the Arnolfini in Bristol, Joni Farthing wanted to make the event bigger & better and increase on first year attendance of 700 women.
A festival of female entrepreneurship, the 2013 event had to appeal to everyone from the working mum to the CEO of a million pound plus turnover business. The event included a market hall where women could directly sell as well as a business services exhibition and a high profile keynote speaker programme including Julie Meyer, city success story and founder of Ariadne Capital.
The solution
Our first priority was to create a story for the event from which we could create a compelling content for multiple audiences and highlight why attendance was a must.
We created a ‘She Who Dares’ theme – focusing on the shared spirit among the women involved in the event to take a risk and aim higher, whether at the start of their entrepreneurial journey or more established. This gave us a platform to use across the media, social media and WOTB website to tell the story of the women involved – engaging potential attendees, exhibitors, sponsors and speakers. This also included personal profiling of founder Joni Farthing and how she’d cashed in her pension and ‘risked it all’ to put on the first event.
The results
As well as securing significant press coverage in regional and national press, including attendance at the event by BBC Points West and profile of Joni in the Guardian, Joni went on to be nominated for Institute of Directors’ Businesswoman of the Year. AMBITIOUS also co-founded a WOTB Business Club as a legacy of the event alongside the client, securing Smith & Williamson as host sponsors.
