Getting your foot on the PR career ladder can be a challenge. It’s a competitive industry. But with a summer of social distancing restrictions in place, securing a work place experience has added another barrier for many students this year.
We’ve been able to offer a ‘remote working’ internship and last month we took on our first Intern, Sophie, to support us with our outbound marketing activities. As part of her four-week internship with us and the University of Bristol, Sophie wrote about her role as Business Development Executive.
Over to Sophie…
As Business Development Executive Intern, I was primarily responsible for helping AMBITIOUS update their client relations management system, helping to segment their contacts.
I reported to Junior Content Executive Izzy day to day, who enabled me to work on multiple tasks from a slightly different discipline. This involved researching current PR trends, helping to create content for social media channels, learning how to track social media engagement using analytics tools, and being shown how to create media lists for prospective clients.
The broad spectrum of opportunities I was given at AMBITIOUS enabled me to fully broaden my understanding of the different aspects of an integrated PR firm. From creative graphic design tasks, to optimising SEO for blog posts, I was able to immerse myself into the innovative and dynamic world of PR.
Contributing to the COVID-19 effort
Due to the current global pandemic, the nature of my internship was remote. This involved Zoom meetings, e-mail and Whatsapp communication. Despite the lack of face-to-face interaction, I felt that I was fully able to undertake the tasks I was required to do through online calls and meetings – everyone in the team was very helpful and always on hand to offer me any advice or tips.
Throughout the course of my internship we had a few team meetings a week, whilst I was also lucky enough to have a 1-to-1 session with each member of the senior team about their role at AMBITIOUS and their journey into PR. This gave me invaluable insight into the industry, as I was able to explore the different facets of PR through the experience of the team themselves.
My time at AMBITIOUS was an enriching learning experience that enabled me to develop and refine an abundance of professional skills, whilst also deepening my knowledge of the PR industry; from using Adobe Photoshop to create and edit graphics, to using Capsule CRM system to expand AMBITIOUS’ client relations network.
This internship has been extremely rewarding and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is looking to pursue a career in PR in the future. Remote can be rewarding.
